Ugly Christmas Sweater Season

By Chelsea Gilmore on December 5, 2017

Ugly Christmas sweater season is upon us. So, pull those bedazzled Santa Claus and Rudolph-emblazoned sweaters from the depths of your closets, because it’s that tacky time of year again.

What started as a tacky, holiday-themed party, has now turned into a celebration no one can escape. The uglier the sweater, the more heads turn. Christmas threw up on what was an item of clothing worn for warmth, and turned it into a fashion statement of holiday cheer.

Over the years, ugly Christmas sweaters were hard to come by. Now most major department stores carry them in a variety of tackiness to fit all styles. Ask a sales associate (the ones with the Santa cap and light bulb earrings) for assistance and they are sure to take you to the nearest winter wonderland of knitted sweaters and cardigans galore.

I remember scavenging through Goodwill, calling to the Christmas angels to bless me with the ugliest sweater I could find, but now they are a commodity. Long gone are the days of asking your grandparents to gather their dust-collecting sweaters and show off those tacky designs.

It’s as if the Christmas sweaters our parents once forced us to wear, we gladly welcome like a neatly wrapped gift with a giant red bow. Ugly Christmas sweater designs, once a retro article of clothing only worn once a year, are now even seen on suits, t-shirts, and leggings for all to wear.

The ugly Christmas sweater trend has evolved into the mainstream holiday parties we have come to know today. While the sweaters may get uglier, holiday spirit will never dull. Merry and bright are those who embrace tacky sweaters custom designed to blink, shine, and sparkle.

Accompanied with a Santa-like jolliness, ugly Christmas sweaters will remain a tradition everyone can enjoy with a tall glass of eggnog.
